The Southern Gang
It's been almost seven years since we entered "The Pug Zone." From Daisy to Zoe to Cassie, our lives have been enriched from the relationship and through them we have discovered kindred spirits. While others wonder how we endure the dog hair, the poop eating, the fights, the vet bills and the total domination by our "Chinese Triad," all it takes is a twist of the head or a gentle "woo woo" to remind us that their unconditional love and companionship is priceless.
Daisy was our first introduction to the little pig-tailed, barrel-chested breed. Showered with the affection of being an only dog for almost a year, it was natural for her to develop her prissy, better-than-you attitude. She trots with elegance and turns away in disgust at other dogs not worthy of her presence.
Zoe arrived as a hopeful companion to Daisy. Unfortunately, she failed to meet Daisy's requirements for civility and, although they play occasionally, it is apparent Daisy would readily embrace the notion of becoming a one-dog family again. Zoe is mischievous and loves nothing more than a good romp through the mud or a day spent chewing on bark.
Cassie joined the brood almost four years ago from pug rescue and brought with her more than just her need for love. Through Cassie we joined Alabama Pug Rescue and received validation that we were not crazy for allowing our pugs to enslave us. Since her adoption, Cassie has transformed from a timid, quiet creature into a spoiled, barking machine. Her love of Popsicle sticks, Doritos and jerky treats probably spurred the change.
The friendships we have formed in Alabama Pug Rescue have meant so much to us. When we feared we might lose Zoe in September, the prayers that the members of Alabama Pug Rescue offered provided the hope we needed to endure. When members went to visit Zoe, we were speechless. There were no words to properly convey our appreciation.
Our "Beyond the Rescue" started with Cassie but continues every day, and we are grateful for the privilege and honor to be members of this wonderful organization. |
